I think McGwire just did that Andro stuff before it was illegal and he never did any of the crap Bonds did. McGwire already had the body frame to be a power hitter and he consistently put up huge numbers when he wasn’t injured. Obviously the Andro put him over the top, but he still could have broken the record without it. Bonds didn’t have a chance in hell to put up those kind of numbers before he got on roids. He also was doing the drugs in secret. McGwire was upfront with what he was using. Bottom line is Bonds is a piece of shit and I hope he blows out his knee for good in his first at-bat this season. I hate him and what he has done to the legitimate records that Ruth and Aaron made.
Go back and look at pictures of McGwire earlier in his career. He was a bean pole. His physical transformation was just as profound as Bonds’. Also, Flando, your contention that Bonds didn’t put up big numbers before drugs is false. In 1993 (five years before this new book claims he took roids) he hit 46 homeruns, only six less than Mac’s highest total before his record-breaking year. Plus, Canseco’s book alleges that he and Mac shot each other up with roids as teammates. Both Bonds and Mac are equally guilty of crimes against baseball, IMHO.
I agree with you that Mac may have taken roids and he did have a significant body transformation, but I still say Mac had a frame capable of packing on muscle more naturally than Bonds. True, most guys are skinny when they enter the bigs because muscle mass doesn’t mature until your mid twenties. Bottom line is that Bonds was a 40-40 man coming his entire career until recently and Mac was always a power guy. Also, you can’t compare how Bonds had a fluke 46 HR season with Mac’s consistent flirting with 50+. And finally there is no doubt that they both had to use performance enhancers to achieve their records. I guess my point was that Mac’s transformation wasn’t as severe as Bond’s.
