At least according to Obama. He thinks I’m rich because between my wife and I make over $75,000 a year!!
Illinois Sen. Barack Obama went after the “We’re not paying enough taxes to the government” vote today during a television interview in New York.
First, he said the Bush tax cuts ought to die. He likes that top marginal rate of 39%. Although the non-partisan National Journal recently declared him the most liberal of the 100 senators, Obama denied being a “wild-eyed liberal,” which wasn’t what the Journal called him, but it sounds good on TV where everything moves by so quickly.
Maria Bartiromo on CNBC’s “Closing Bell” asked, “Who should pay more and who should pay less?” Predictably, the politician chose to talk about who would benefit from his higher tax plan, not who would get socked the hardest. But from his answers it sounds like the “wealthy” in his mind are those making more than $75,000.
“I would not increase taxes for middle class Americans and in fact I want to…. provide a tax cut for people who are making $75,000 a year or less,” he said. “For those folks, I want an offset on the payroll tax that would be worth as much as $1,000 for a family.
If he is going to lump people like me into the “rich” catagory, he’s gonna get smoked in the election. (Which it appears that is going to happen, barring some sort of classic McCain meltdown.) He is already losing to McCain in head to head match-ups. (It’s too early to trust those kind of polls though.)
UPDATE: Maybe he means $75,000 a person.. so $150,000 total… If that’s the case, then, damn, I’m not rich. Though personally I don’t think $150,000 should be considered rich anyway.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackYou make over 75 grand…..you are rich!!…why do you act like you have no money
Heh, we are not all overpaid like you, “Joe.” How you liking Idol so far?
I think earning 75,000 a person is pretty rich, and I live in California.
You would think that, hippy.
I don’t think you can lump somebody who makes $75,000 a year in with folks who make 150,000 or 200,000 or higher.. It’s a huge difference.
well then where do you draw the line and say this person is rich and this one isnt?
You don’t draw anyline. You don’t punish people just because they are successful.
It’s called the Fair Tax. A tax based on what you spend, not what you earn.

Okay, good luck with that Huckabee
Calling me names doesn’t make is less right.
actually i think i should pay more taxes then the person who makes less than i do. i can afford it.
That’s the beauty of the fair tax. You will pay more! It’s a straight sales tax. People with more money buy more things, and buy more expensive things.
Higher price items will mean more sales tax you pay out. People below the poverty line won’t pay any sales taxes at all.
At like 23% sales tax a $10,000 car will cost another 2300 in sales tax, while a $50,000 car will cost you another $11,500 in taxes.
Wow, and you thought there was a big lobbying industry clinging to our tax code now…just wait until the maker of every single product has a direct interest in what gets deducted, etc.
Also, doesn’t this severely dampen the supply-side thinking all conservatives swear by? Giant sales taxes are known to decrease spending and/or create black markets.
Right, only when there is a giant sales tax, AND income tax.
